If it does not say that it is in Tablature, it is not, don't send e mails asking if there is a chance that it might be as well, they have gone unanswered every week, no one has time to tell you what you have already been told.    Rafael Olmedo was born on March 12, 1837. He was a musician of many talents playing violin and later guitar and became one of El Salvador's most important 19th century composers. By the time Agustin Barrios arrived in El Salvador in 1933, two that became his students were René and Cortés Andrino-the great grand children of Maestro Andrino.

About the history of the manuscript notebook:

This Catalan notebook of manuscripts is mentioned on three pages in Domingo Prat ‘s “Diccionario de Guitarristas”, published in 1934 by Romero & Fernandez in Buenos Aires, Argentina. In the entry of José Augustino on page 17, there is the mention of a composition by José dedicated to Jovita Feliu. On page 42 in the entries of Buenaventura & Narciso Bassols it is cited. On page 123 in the entry of Jovita Feliu, to whom the José Augustino composition was dedicated. The manuscript was in the possession of José Ferrer Esteve de Pujadas, who was born on March 13, 1835 in Torroella de Montgri. When he died on March 7, 1916, his archive was ceded to his friend Professor Domingo Bonet. In 1930, when Domingo was in poor health, Prof. Bonet's daughter (Magda) contacted Domingo Prat, who was in Spain at that time with his family. Prat bought the archive of Domingo Bonet, which contained the Ferrer archive. Domingo Bonet died on April 22, 1931, at the age of 90. More history and the titles in the link to the page.

Mario Rodriguez Arenas Vol. 3 of Los Maestros de Buenos Aires

   In 1999 FFSI purchased the archives of Mario Rodriguez Arenas. This book, the 3rd volume in the “Los Maestros de Buenos Aires” series, is a result of that acquisition.

   Mario Rodriguez Arenas was born in Buenos Aires on September 30, 1879. He was the son of Manuel Rodriguez and Martina Arenas. He began to study the guitar on June 15, 1903 under the direction of Angel del Valle. This study lasted for 2 years. At that point Mario began to study harmony with Enrique Morera as well as perfection studies.

   In 1907 he began to dedicated himself to teaching. He soon had a distinguished name for himself as well as many wealthy students from the upper classes of the porteño society.

   Ricardo Muñoz recounts a story in his biography of Mario Rodriguez Arenas in the magazine “Revista de la Guitarra” issue no. 13 of September 1945. Mario told him that in 1908 when Domingo Prat had brought the first editions of Francisco Tarrega to Buenos Aires, the preludes, tremolo pieces, Capricho Arabe, etc. sold out in just 8 days at the Casa Nuñez music store. It was well over a month before the guitar aficionados of Buenos Aires had another opportunity to purchase these works again. Completion of biography in page.

   I first played these pieces in 1980, if there is a set of efervescent 19th century works it these 5 pieces. Very modern in sound, yet in form, as one expects. The bass line of the tremolo in the Reverie Op. 19 rivals, the best of Agustin Barrios' pieces two generations later. Giulio Regondi was a child prodigy in Europe in 1830 when all royalty of whatever nation-state knew who he was at the age of nine. In 1831 Fernando Sor dedicated his Op. 46 “Souvenir d'Amitié Fantasia” to Giulio Regondi. David Russell has recorded some of these, and David Starobin as well. It was the late virtuoso Leif Christensen who introduced my ears to the wonderous sounds, as he played a Lacote and a Panormo on the LP that was released c. 1980.

Napoleon Coste: Collected Guitar Works by The great French Guitarist, who was a student of Fernando Sor, and friend of Carruli, Carcassi & Aguado. These are published by Chanterelle editions. All titles are listed in the link page.

Antonio Jimenez Manjón was the artist who refused to pay for a specially ordered guitar from the taller of Manuel Ramirez in 1912-he actually asked for a discount, and then with the agreement that he could pay on a time payment plan. The guitar was reconfigured from an 11 string to a 6 string and given to Andres Segovia in late 1912 who recorded his first 20 immortal songs beginning in May of 1927. This guitar was made by Santos Hernandez who was Manuel's foreman.

The Complete Solo Guitar Works by Nicolo Paganini published by Chanterelle. The guitar works of the immortal Italian violinist.
These editions contain the original facsimile, as well as the modern typeset. They are edited by Giuseppe Gazzelioni.

   Pixinguinha was admired and hailed by great Brazilian musicians such as Villa-Lobos, Nazareth, Mignone, Gnattali, and Carvalho. He collaborated with guitarists such as Joao Pernambuco and Laurindo Almeida. The guitarist and composer Baden Powell was his protege.

   All of Brazil mourned Pixinguinha's death. At his funeral more than 200,000 people gathered and sang Carinhoso, his most famous tune, as a final tribute to the beloved composer.

   Annibal Augusto Sardinha known as Garoto was born on June 28, 1915 in Sao Paolo and died in Rio de Janeiro on May 3, 1955. Garoto began to study with maestro Attilio Bernardini in 1933. This teacher in 1950 was involved in the publishing of the first anthology of the music of Agustin Barrios by Romeo Di Giorgio. $14,95. I used these back in 1979-80 when I studied with Byron Pang. All colleges and universities use these as building blocks for creating technique in the first year. This edition edited by Simon Wynberg also has two pages of biographical and historical information about where this edition was derived from, that's very interesting for those who love details.  I still use these with all my classical students, why not, Miguel Llobet taught them to Rey de la Torre in 1932, who taught them to Byron Pang in 1966.

The Andres Segovia Archive by Angel Gilardino

   This is a marvelous series of maunscripts put into standard notation by maestro Angel Gilardino. In the 1920's, as Andrés Segovia was becoming a world renowned guitarist, there were composers in Europe and elsewhere that were writing for the maestro. This series brings today's guitar players the opportunity to play pieces that Andrés had in some cases only been played in Segovia's hotel room. Each piece has the original manuscript and the standard notation and biographical pages and one or more photos of the composer.
