by Lola Fernandez 136 pages $39.95
- Flamenco is not just about music, but it is, above all else, music. Flamenco music is a unique and pure art form with an unusual degree of artistic wealth and musical complexity. Flamenco Music Theory is an analysis of the specific elements related to its expression: form, rhythm, melody and harmony. This classical approach to analysis, theory and notation provides musicians with familiar tools and terminology for a more detailed study of flamenco music. Flamenco musicians will find this book helpful for gaining further insight into their art form. Composers and artists from other musical genres can become familiar with flamenco by learning more about its musical elements, while students in music schools and conservatories will find Flamenco Music Theory useful as a textbook for further study.
Queen of the Gypsies The Life & Legend of Carmen Amaya by
Paco Sevilla 402 pages-11 photos & 4 page index $29.95 The most incredible book, on more than just Carmen Amaya, on everyone in Flamenco. You'll read dozens of pages about Carmen, and then interjected will be biographical details of a singer, dancer or guitarist. There are so many anecdotes about everyone that I found it hard to set down. In fact, I've read it while practicing guitar at the same time. It's been called the real "Lives & Legends" by my colleague Ron Fernandez - referring to the Donn Pohren book written in the '60's. Paco Sevilla who edited the Jaleo magazine in the '70-80's, has taken the information from several hundred sources, including interviews, with the warmest presentation one could want. He makes you feel like you're there at the death of Ramon Montoya when the public lined up for blocks to view the body of the Maestro of Flamenco Guitar. Go with Carmen when she buys 3 fur coats or 7 fur stoles at once, or with the desperate aficianado who finds out tickets are sold out 3 months in advance of a 3 month long appearance at theatres in North and South America. Find out what Hollywood star sold her home to Carmen. Hear about the toll on Sabicas, who says they toured for 5 years straight, 49 weeks of each year. The details are so numerous on not less than 115 icons of the Golden Age of Flamenco. In a world of 5 stars this book deserves 6 stars. It will be a very long time, if ever for another book like this to come along.
A Way of Life by Donn Pohren 198 pages-14 w/ B&W photos $ 27.95 paperback Back in Print. Donn Pohren let's you in on what it was like in Spain, before the changing of time. Read within, to find about about a life that really no longer exists. This contains a whole lot about the daily life of Diego del Gastor.

The Flamencos of Cadiz Bay by Gerald Howson $29.95 Hardbound This book recalls the experiences of a lad from England who went to Cadiz, Spain in 1954. The Magnificent Guitar of Jorge Morel
A Life of Music
238 pages $29.95
This book is the story of love, life and loss told by the legendary Argentinean guitarists, Jorge Morel. This book traces his early years with his father in Buenos Aires, to the love of his life, his wife, Olga and of his life as one of the greats of the guitar. The Maestro also shares his thoughts on many subjects with blunt honesty not often expected or heard in these politically correct times.
Through tragedy and loss, Jorge Morel continues to compose and perform to this day. His positive outlook on life and art and his authentic values are truly one of a kind. This book tells his story and contains 21 of Maestro Morel’s great pieces and arrangements (9 new compositions presented here for the first time!). In the words of the Maestro, “This is the definitive work on my life and my music!”

For those that speak and read Spanish, this wonderful book on the life and works of maestro Francisco Tarrega will give you hours of entertaining reading. For those that don't speak or read Spanish, the large amount of photos, illustrations of manuscripts, concert programs, letters (early published editions and manuscripts of Capricho Arabe, etc.) that are a true delight to the eye, may motivate you to add this edition to your library. The Spanish language is the language of the guitar, and our guitaristic heritage is derived from mostly that entity of players, composers and maestros. I'm not trying lessen the contributions of the Italian, French, German, English and Russian guitarists, but undoubtedly the world today is at the current musicianship level due to the great influence of Tarrega. My teacher's teacher's teacher studied with the maestro (for example: Randy Osborne (1979-81) studied with Byron Pang (1966-70) who studied with José Rey de la Torre (1932-35) who studied with Miguel Llobet.).
The companion sheet music edition with CD by the same author is: FRANCISCO TARREGA Selección de Obras (Selection of Works) with a CD
by Adrián Rius Espinós 29 pieces 101 pages $44.95 with a CD of the maestro's student, Josefina Robledo (1892-1972), playing five pieces and talking for over 20 minutes about her experiences with the father of modern classical guitar, Francisco Tarrega. This is an incredible opportunity!

Texts: English, French, German, Italian; Texts and technical drawings by Richard E. Bruné (My colleague, Richard Bruné, is writing the foreword to my book "Annotations for the History of the Classical Guitar in Argentina 1822-2000")
Photos in high resolution by courtesy of The Metropolitan Museum of Arts.
Andres Segovia was the first guitarist to effectively transcend the limitations perceived by a skeptical public about the classical guitar. Until his time, guitar was relegated to very minor importance compared to the lofty heights maintained by piano and violin virtuosos. This release is a homage not only to the artistry of Segovia but also to that of Hermann Hauser, the violinmaker who, in 1937, built this extraordinary instrument. Texts and technical drawings by the renowned American luthier Richard E. Bruné, who has studied and photographed in detail this famous guitar. The guitar of Andres Segovia is now property of the Metropolitan Museum of New York, which has collaborated with DYNAMIC to make this tribute to the art of the great Spanish guitarist who died in 1987.
La Chitarra di Liuteria-Masterpieces of Guitar Making by Stefano Grondona & Luca Waldner Text in English & Italian English translation by Laura Davey Photography by Massimo Mandelli 216 pages with over 400 breathtaking photos-mostly in color.
Hardbound w/ CD $119.95 weight 2 1/2 lbs. Available once again 8 28 07
This extraordinary book that was published in July of 2002 was a decade in the making. Stefano Grondona (who studied with maestro Andrés Segovia in the 1960's) & luthier Luca Waldner have assembled a historical montage of Antonio Torres guitars & instruments by Spanish & European luthiers from the 18th, though mostly 19th & 20th century. There is many cases also biographical information & photos of the artists who used and owned these wonderful musical instruments. The accompanying CD of 28 tracks, by artist Stefano Grondona, of well known classical guitar pieces, utilizes his access to the Torres (built in 1858-FE 08-this guitar won the 1858 Seville exposition, 1859-ex collection-Miguel Llobet, 1862-back & sides of paper maché, 1885, 1887- SE107 & SE110), Garcia (1906), Simplicio (1929), Santos Hernandez (1918), Domingo Esteso (1926), Hermann Hauser I (1947), & Robert Bouchet (1969) concert guitars. There are many more guitars by these makers, than featured on the CD.
Sheldon Urlik, who released his own book "A Collection of Fine Spanish Guitars from Torres to the Present" in 1997, said: "This is the most beautiful book about classical guitars I've ever seen".
I've been half joking for weeks, that buyers should use a surgical mask when viewing the book, so they don't drool on the pages. If you love beautiful looking & sounding classical guitars and want a serious historical perspective to read: your time has arrived. It will be quite a long time, if ever before this book is surpassed.
There is a double CD by Stefano Grondona playing these instruments also available to get the most complete effect. See: Stefano Grondona CD

The Vihuela de Mano and The Spanish Guitar: A Dictionary of the makers of plucked and bowed Musical Instruments by José Romanillos Vega and Marian Harris Winspear. 654 pages with 28 appendixes. Hardbound $199.95.
This wonderful dictionary of Spanish born luthiers has over 1,500 entries from the last 800 years. The most remarkable aspects are the biographical information taken from the birth and baptismal records from the churchs throughout Spain. Who was at what baptism, and when, this has it all. Some of my favorite parts were the correspondence of Teleforo Julve with the luthiers he supplied entry level guitars, bandurrias, lauds and more.

Fernando Sor Composer And Guitarist biography 2nd edition paperback only 199 pages, 17 illustrations, $48.95 by Dr. Brian Jeffery
Fernando Sor, born in Barcelona in 1778-died in Paris 1839, is without a doubt, the most influential and magnificent guitar composer of modern times. All serious students of the guitar, in their quest of attaining a B.A. and later a M.A. through any College or University are aided in the ascension to becoming a virtuoso, by the immortal works of this maestro.
I first read this in 1981, when it was a 1st edition. In 1993, when I was in the process of learning my 3rd language (French), it was the follow up to my method book. All the French is translated (which indicates the scholarship of it's author), but for those of you who are linguistists, or just beginning the trek of doing so, it is beyond entertainment to do research in an additional language. I encourage you all to do so, I can read six languages and it only took a decade.

Most of the listings in this catalog are in two places presently, in the British Library or the Royal College of Music in London. But before they arrived at their present locations there was a circuitous journey. When Eleuterio Tiscornia began collecting classical guitar sheet music in 1897 he was given some Fernando Sor pieces by Dr Martin Ruiz Moreno (1833-1919). A half a century later, his archive included 189 different artists with first editions from the 18th century onward. For more extensive synopsis, click on the link:
Abel Fleury El Poeta de la Guitarra (The Poet of the Guitar) by Héctor Garcia Martinez
Spanish language edition $19.95, 3rd edition with 32 pages softcover with English translation addendum by Randy Osborne $24.95.
There are dozens of photos and illustrations from 1900 (the home where Abel was born) to the mid 1950's (includes multiple photos of Abel Fleury's "Escuadrones de Guitarras"--performing in theaters or on radio with his "Squadron of Guitars" consisting of 12-100 players) .
2003 is the Centennial of the birth of Abel Fleury, who passed away in 1958. My colleague and co-author, Hector Garcia Martinez, published this initially in 1987.
Abel Fleury's Argentine folkmusic on the guitar was splendid. The famous Argentine guitarist and singer, Atahualpa Yupanqui, said of Fleury's tone: "No one has outdone his tone yet." Abel Fleury owned two guitars built by Francisco Simplicio. One of these can be seen in this book: La Chitarra di Liuteria.
For the companion CD of Abel Fleury see: G. E. 43 Abel Fleury The Poet of the Guitar
La Guitarra en Cataluña 1769-1939 by Josep Maria Mangado y Artigas, from Tecla Editions in London. 303 pages-77 illustrations & photos. Text is in Spanish only. Hardbound $97.95 & Softbound $59.95
This remarkable book, for those that read Spanish, will elucidate beyond your expectations the history in your hands. The province that's capital is Barcelona is rich in history with classical guitar virtuosos. Long before Miguel Llobet & Emilio Pujol, (it's most notable 20th century concertizers, teachers & recording artists) were a stream of contemporaries of Fernando Sor & progenitors of his epoch that carried on his legacy. Fernando Sor is not covered here, as the portent of the book is to cover the "subjects of the king". The inclusion of previously unattainable complete biographies of Jose Ferrer (1835-1916), Jose Broca (1805-1882), Jose Viñas (1823-1888), Jaime Bosch (1826-1895), Jose Costa y Hugas (1827-1881), Miguel Mas (1846-1923), Juan Nogues (1875-1930), Antonio Alba (1870-19??), Alfredo Romea (1883-1955) & Jose Sirera (1884-1931) fills a void that was for a long time vacant. The overall materials exhibited are: letters from the artists, covers of first editions, newspaper accounts of concerts & deaths, complete listing of the works of each artist, hand written manuscripts & their current residence (as well as the trail of how materials 200 years old have passed down from teacher to teacher to collector).
Tecnologia de la Guitarra Argentina by Ricardo Muñoz $39.95 text only available in Spanish (The Technology of the Argentine Guitar) 233 pages w/ dozens of tables, graphs & photos of wood grain under a microscope, specification and vibrational comparisons of Panormo, Pages, Vinaccia, Ramirez, Santos Hernandez, Torres & Garcia & Simplicio guitars.
Eminent Argentine guitar historian, Ricardo Muñoz (1887-1968) researched for years on the many aspects of constructing guitars. He studied the instruments of the Spanish and European masters. He studied the woods used and the vibrations they exhibited-something that today's luthiers do quite frequently. He ultimately designed a sonorous model constructed with all native woods. His ground breaking research is held within.
The Guitar & Mandolin by Philip J. Bone By far the most comprehensive book of biographies of Classical Guitarists & Classical Mandolinists ever written in English. I've had this in my own reference library for well over 15 years now. 382 pages w/ approximately 450 biographies, 125 photos (artists & instruments), 32 excerpts of music, w/ 8 pages of indexes. I recently aquired the last 4 copies available in North America from the current distributor-it is about to go out of print. These biographies were initially published in the "B.M.G." (Banjo, Mandolin & Guitar Magazine-published in London) from 1903-1940. $89.95
Philip J. Bone Manuscript to "The Guitar & Mandolin" 1st edition. This was first published in 1914. Initially the biographies of the guitarists, mandolinists & composers appeared in periodicals, and due to requests worldwide he decided to publish a compilation. This is the double spaced typed manuscript with the musical examples pasted in, or in envelopes, that was taken to Schott & Co. Ltd. in London to be published. It is a two volume bound manuscript. Volume I is A-F (202 numbered pages), and Volume II is G-Z ( unnumbered pages) along with an appendix that is not in the enlarged second edition from 1954. This contains the sparse ink corrections, typing errors (3 word duplications) and has a sense of pre-editing when comparing it to the published edition verbatum. $6,000.
The Rioplatense Guitar-The early Guitar and it's context in Argentina & Uruguay by Richard Pinnell
501 pages-17 page index Hardbound $45.00, Softbound $35.00
This is the most through book of it's kind-that covers the guitar within the societies of South America since the discovery & conquest of the New World. Flamenco lovers will enjoy the history of Andalusian immigration to all points of human confluence. Curiously enough, this book cites Juan Alias, Mario Rodriguez Arenas and Ricardo Muñoz among it's 100's of references, because of their unforgetable prescence.
The Orphee Data-base of Guitar Records compiled by Jacques Chaine & edited by Matanya Ophee in 1990 444 pages Hardbound $35.00 This discography contains a listing of LP-CD-MC entries that covers 2,500 guitarists, 5,100 composers & 6,500 recordings. It covers a wide range of styles-Classical, Flamenco, Jazz, Latin American, Lute & more. In 1991 a Supplement of the Data-base in paperback was released with 111 pages of an additional 400 guitarists and over 800 new recordings, with both books totaling over 57,000 song entries. $10.00
One can find out how many versions of Francisco Tarrega's pieces that are immortal have been recorded, for example "Recuerdos de La Alhambra", not less than 197 times.
The Segovia - Ponce Letters Edited by Miguel Alcazar & translated by Peter Segal Paperback 290 pages $39.95. The index is 7 1/2 pages. The 129 letters cover the communications from Andres to Manuel from 1923-1948 and cover more subjects than compositions alone. It covers touring, negotiations with publishers, critics, and much more. The letters are in Spanish and followed by the English translation. This is a great historical document into the real life successes and travails of the Maestro and his friend & composer Manuel Ponce.

Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco by Corazon Otero 167 pages $24.95 paperback- I can't offer this at the present time 7 6 07
This is a wonderful biography about a great composer for the guitar and other instruments. There are dozens of photos that span Mario's life, there's a chapter of correspondence with Andrés Segovia, facsimiles of manuscripts, a list of his guitar works, a discography, a chapter (1 of 24 chapters) that deals with Anti-Semitism and the travails he encountered, and chapters that cover the triumphs that he deserved for his incessant labor, and of course a lot more in this detailed and well researched book.
Catalogue of the Rischel & Birket-Smith Collection of Guitar Music in The Royal Library of Copenhagen Compiled by Jytte Torpp Larsson & edited by Peter Danner Hardbound 263 pages $44.95 Have you ever wondered who were the 1st edition publishers for the classical guitar virtuosos of the 19th century ? This book is one of the very few that elucidates that information. Not only are there published works, but hand-written manuscripts as well. In some cases received from the virtuosos themselves in the case of Napoleon Coste. This collection has been the well from which many of the Chantrelle and Tecla facsimile editions were drawn.
Anton Diabelli's Guitar Works: A Thematic Catalogue

This great book took many years of dedication to document the extensive listings from over 600 libraries and collections that were contacted. This includes guitar solos, duos (a terz guitar included), trios, with voice, flute, piano, violin and cello. Another great resource published by my colleague Matanya Ophee's Edtions Orphée.
